The Los Angeles County District Attorney recommended on Thursday that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 murder of their parents, pointing to the renewed public interest in the case. Jose and Kitty Menendez were fatally shot in their Beverly Hills home as they watched TV on Aug. 20, 1989. Following two mistrials, the brothers were eventually convicted. They were 18 and 21 at the time, and their defense involved allegations of sexual abuse.

After a controversial series on Netflix and documentary brought the spotlight back to the case, District Attorney George Gascón believes resentencing is appropriate due to extenuating circumstances. That would make the brothers eligible for parole, and now it’s up to a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge.

They have been in prison nearly 35 years, and their lawyer, Mark Geragos, says their family is united in wanting the boys to come home. That includes, their mother’s sister, Joan.

But wait, Erik is A DAD??  Not biologically, but he has been the only dad Talia has known despite him being in prison her whole life. Erik married her mom, Tammi, behind bars and her biological dad passed away when Talia was just 10-months-old.
