Incredible Artwork to be Created on Miles Avenue in Downtown Indio on March 10-11

Indio, CA (March 7, 2018) – The City of Indio’s Public Arts and Historic Preservation Commission invites the public to create their own works of art and see professional artists draw extraordinary art pieces on the street and sidewalks of Miles Avenue in downtown Indio on March 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event is free to attend and the public will be provided free chalk.

“We’re so pleased to be bringing this family-friendly festival back to Indio for its 10th year,” said William G. Maloney, Public Arts & Historic Preservation Commissioner. “This event is a great way for professional artists to vie for cash prizes while showcasing their art for those attending this fun weekend filled with chalk art, food and live music.”

Eleven professional artists are competing to win the $2,500 prize money. Second and third place winners will receive $1,500 and $1,000, respectively. Professional artists will begin their artwork on Thursday, March 8, and over 300 elementary school students from Indio will be visiting on Friday, March 9 to create their own masterpieces.

A variety of vendors will be serving savory and delicious food and beverages. There will also be a great lineup of live music and entertainment, including local rock band Ocho Ojos, who performed at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival; singer Giselle Woo; young artists from the Academy of Musical Performance; and a special performance by the Desert TheatreWorks cast of the musical Grease, which runs from March 8-25 at the Indio Performing Arts Center.

The event is located on Miles Avenue between Oasis Street and Smurr Street, which will be closed to vehicular traffic on March 8-11. Ample parking is available for the public on Towne Street, Smurr Street, and Fargo Street.
