Coachella 2014 Review

Apr 20, 2014 -- 10:00am

The wristbands have been cut off, the dust has settled, the lasers have been turned off and the astronaut has flown away... Coachella 2014 is officially a w-rap!
The Goldenvoice produced music festival rocked the Indio Polo Grounds April 11th-13th and April 18th-20th featuring headling acts Outkast, Muse & Arcade Fire.
Weekend ONE continued the trend, where the worlds of "Hollywood", "Fashion" and "Music" collide. The Coachella Valley was home to numerous off site VIP pool parties / after parties including a wild 4-day extravaganza at the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs, where the "LED DAYCLUB" pool parties featured top DJ's A-Track, Dirty South, Disclosure and David Guetta. These parties had a Las Vegas vibe, super hot crowd, daybeds, GPEN VIP AREA and high energy sets. If you did your homework, googled the proper websites and was fortunate enough to land an RSVP E-Mail, you probably enjoyed the sights and sounds of one of these top notch events: The Annual Filter Magazine Kick-Off Party at The Yacht Club in Indio (April 10th), The "Details at Midnight" private estate party (April 11th), The "Guess Hotel" poolside party at The Viceroy, a stylish boutique resort in Palm Springs (April 12-13th), The Hennessy sponsored pool party at The Ingleside Inn in Palm Springs (April 13th) where fans were treated to a special DJ set by hip-hop superstar Jermaine Dupri (special appearance by Nas), The "Weekender" at The Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs (April 12-13) and the Neon Carnival, which took place at the Thermal Airport on Saturday night (April 12th) featuring carnival rides/games, celebrity appearances and "LIVE" DJ sets. Other top brands that made their presence felt during Weekend ONE included H&M, Lacoste, Forever 21, McDonald's and Vestal, all sponsoring parties around the Desert.
While the paparazzi was buzzing around the parties trying to get the hot shots, the true "hot shots" of the music industry made special appearances at the festival.
Coachella Weekend ONE kicked off on Friday April 11th with the return of hip-hop duo Outkast on the Main Stage, but Saturday's festivities took the headlines in publications all around the world. Fans went absolutely crazy when Pharrell Williams brought up special guest Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, along with Busta Rhymes, Nelly and Snoop Dog for appearances on the Outdoor Stage. People were frantically trying to upload photos/videos to social media sites, but before they could actually catch their breath, Nas delivered one of the most memorable performances of the year with Diddy and the King of Kings - Jay Z joining him on stage to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of "ILLMATIC". Rumors also turned into reality at Coachella, as Solange brought up her sister Beyonce for a quick dance routine during her performance. Beat writers, reporters & photographers could not move fast enough to cover all of the amazing surprises! Sunday may have brought one of the biggest shockers to Coachella, the appearance of Justin Bieber on stage with Chance the Rapper. As fashion bloggers began picking apart the Bieb's hip-hop attire, I personally liked his style. Even the rock fans were treated to guest appearances at Coachella, as Lemmy of Motorhead shredded the Mohave Tent with legendary guitarist Slash. Jhene Aiko was joined by Drake in the Gobi Tent for the song "From Time". As the sun rised on Monday morning, Coachella fans who attended Weekend ONE were heading home with memories that will truly last a lifetime!
Coachella mover and shakers that either stayed in town or arrived early for weekend two, got to see Fitz & The Tantrums headline "Tachevah", a free block party produced by Goldenvoice at the Spa Resort Casino parking lot in Downtown Palm Springs on Wednesday April 16th. The band was nice enough to stop by the Mix 100.5 studios prior to their set for an interview and acoustic performance with our Mid-Day DJ "Mozingo" The "LED DAYCLUB" pool parties kicked off their second weekend on Thursday April 17th with a high energy set by Skrillex, followed by Martin Garrix on Friday (April 18th), Tiesto on Saturday (April 19th) and Showtek on Sunday (April 20th).
While Coachella Weekend TWO featured less parties and Hollywood socialites, the festival itself delivered another stellar line-up of performances including a super hot set by Outkast who came out strong on Friday night with their smash hit "B.O.B.". One of the early Weekend TWO surprises happened when Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day joined The Replacements. Saturday's weather was absolutely beautiful, considering a week earlier, fans, production staff & artists were battling the wild wind/dust storms. This week's setting made Pharrell Williams very "Happy" and his set/voice benefitted greatly on Saturday night. While fans eagerily awaited a repeat of Weekend ONE, they soon sensed that a Gwen & Nelly return would not occur, however, there was no time to be disappointed, as Pharrell's performance was sparked by a surpise appearance by ATL's very own Usher and soon thereafter, The King of King's - Jay Z. Beyonce was spotted shaking her booty backstage, but did not join sister Solange on stage this week. Sahara Tent attendees experienced a wild range of weather patterns that included rain and snow during Fatboy Slim's DJ set. The Coachella production staff pulled out all the bells and whistles that included a jaw-dropping laser light show & tv screen images, even the 25ft. roving astronaut made a cameo appearance from behind the crowd. With a huge Desert following, Queens of the Stone Age rocked the Main Stage and passed the torch to Muse to close it out on Saturday night! The 1975, led by the radio hit "Chocolate", EDM fav's Krewella, Superstar DJ/Producer Calvin Harris and the "Man with 2 Turntables and Microphone" Beck all delivered solid shows to another sold out Coachella crowd on Sunday. The stage was then set for Arcade Fire to close out the festival and the critically acclaimed group came through with another amazing set, that at one point had fans racing from all over the Polo Grounds for what "appeared" to be a special appearance from the Grammy Award Winning French DJ duo Daft Punk. While some people wish they could take back their tweets, others realized that they were being "Punk'd", as even Arcade Fire referred to them as "Paft Dunk". Somewhere, Ashton Kutcher is smiling.
From a fashion stand point, everything I talked about with Kim Appelt of "Style by Kim xo" on my radio show prior to Coachella was true. Neon colors were on their way out and more Boho styles were in the forefront. Listen to the "Coachella Fashion Preview" here
